A model number may help others help you.
When you say shut off exactly what do you mean re: is it blowing the breaker etc? Also does the drum manually rotate fairly easily? Do you have to wait several minutes before you can restart the unit? If yes it sounds like the motor is overheating and tripping it's internal thermal cut-off.
The more info you can provide about the symptoms the better!! |

Your wiring hook up seems OK to me. I am assuming that at your old place it was also a 3 wire hook up. As there are differences for a 3 or 4 wire hook ups. Here is a site with info so you can check your wiring http://www.applianceaid.com/electrical_testing_tips.htmlDo you have heat when it runs? On the motor are 2 centrifugal switches, they are activated once the motor gets close to operating speed. One switch connects in the heater. The other switch disconnects the motor's start winding. If it is not disconnected once the motor starts then it will overheat. So if there is no heat there is a chance that the switch activation mechanism in the motor is not working. Perhaps it has rusted some or it's lubrication has dried up. |

I would open it up and check the motor you may be able to fix it.
Note I am not 100% sure this is your problem as it running only 4 or 5 seconds seems too short of a time for it to build up heat in the motor.
Could be a loose/poor connection that is opening one it heats up a bit so I would check all the wiring going to the motor. |
