We have a Maytag Performa that stopped spinning. The belt is loose and all shredded so we assumed we just need a new belt. When we took the dryer apart we checked the other parts. The idler pulley ( that's the plastic one on the idler arm right?) seems to spin fine. The motor runs fine. But when we stretch the broken belt around the motor pulley and idler pulley, and turn on the dryer, the motor pulley doesn't seem to spin. Is that normal? Is it just because the belt is broken? We are trying to assess if the broken belt is the only problem, or if there is something else wrong that caused the belt to break. My husband seems to think that the motor pulley only engages and spins a bit when we turn the dryer to "off."

I am a little confused by your post, but it sounds like your motor pulley is not attached to the motor correctly. When the motor spins the pulley must spin to turn the belt to turn the drum. The bad pulley may have caused your belt problem. Fortunately the motor pulley on your model is separate from the motor, otherwise the cost is much higher. Here is the pulley for your motor.
