door will not latch, dishwasher filling as if door is shut

the dishwasher is trying to run even though the door is open.
When the on/off switch is depressed (on):
The display on top of the door is off.
the display on the front indicates that the wash cycle is on.
the dishwasher sounds like it is filling with water.
When the on/off switch is out (off):
no lights anywhere
always:
the latch will not catch.
Should I automatically replace the door latch?

I would recommend to replace the door lock assembly which comes with the door switch. - The part number for the door lock assembly is AP2825197 Here are the break down diagrams for the Bosch dishwasher Model SHY56A05 UC/14 (FD8301-)Gene.

I have the same bosch unit and have replaced the door latch part ap3783114 three times. It seems to fix the problem, and is easy to replace, but keeps breaking down. Is there some way to bench test the door latch to see if it is shorted out. Does anyone know what is causing this malfunction.

Make sure the door latch is properly aligned and wired. The files with the instructions are attached. Gene.

I fixed mine this morning with very similar symptoms. First, one of the lights that shines on the front of the control module was appearing thru the little dot over the delay start button..the delay start was not actually on. Mine is a top display on the door as opposed to front, and it never lights up during it's cycles but does light up when the door is open before running in order to let you select desired cycle.
Mine had malfunctioned when I opened the door during a cycle. I took off the door panel this morning and then popped out the lock switch mechanism. What I found was that the curled tongue shaped latch that should wrap around the metal c shaped catch that is attached to the front of the dishwasher, had flipped it'self up 90 degrees in the latched position. Consequently the door just bumps up against the frame and never stays closed.
This latch has a strong spring loaded mechanism and if you remove the switch assembly you can reset the switch. This assembly also has an arm which engages the micro switch when the latch closes and at that point, after a power off/on, the LEDs will illuminate since you are simulating the latch opening. The assembly is easy to test without putting it back in the door to verify. Upon flipping the tongue forward, the latch closes, the microswitch opens and the machine will start is program.
I hope this helps as it's churning away washing as I write with the door latched.

This just happened to me. First, take the trays out to make sure the trays are not blocking the ability to close.
If you look at the locking mechanism on the door and it is in latched closed position, the machine thinks it is closed and will not unlock until the cycle is done. As you look thru the latch opening on the door, the latched position is a half inch plastic tab, the unlocked position is a quarter inch tab. Close the door the best you can and prop a heavy object against it till it completes its cycle, the top display will still be off because the machine thinks that the door is closed. Then grab a strand of zip tie and bend it so that you can loop it thru the latch opening so that it forms a "U" behind the latch and pull it forward. This should simulate the same motion the door would make if you were actually opening it while it was properly latched and just finished a cycle. It should snap it open. (Note, it will not allow the latch to go into unlocked mode until the cycle is complete)
It should only take some light pressure to unlatch at this point if you are pulling hard then the machine is still in locked position and you might have to actually take it apart and follow the other advice above.
