Hello this is my first post, my washer started leaking. I have rebuilt car engines and such so I figured this would not be too complicated. Anyway, I ran the washer through its entire cycles from start to finish. Of course I watched it from the bottom with a flashlight. It didn't leak on the fill cycle. Now when it started to agitate the leaking began.
I looked at the way it leaked from underneath. It was not localized to any specific area but appeared to rain down from the top as best I could see. None of the fill or empty areas appeared to leak. My guess is that it is the "tub seal" I think that is what it is called. I took the machine apart and found the seal looked a little worn and I saw water marks down one side of the outer tub. I am ordering a new seal/ gasket or whatever the term is in washer language.
My question is am I on the right track? And in case it doesn't solve the problem, does anyone know the other most common problems for this machine when it leaks? Any input is appreciated and sorry for the long winded post.
Thank you,
Spclist

It don’t really sound like the tub seal because it is leaking from the top of the tub. The tub seal leaks there the transmission goes into the tub. There is a seal at the top of the tub that could be bad but normally they don’t leak until spin. I would look at the tub to see if there is a hole rusted out. Clothes Washer Repair Guide

Here are your parts Replacement parts for MAYTAG LAT9356AAE Washer - Top Loading | AppliancePartsPros.comI am ordering a new seal/ gasket or whatever the term is in washer language. I am assuming you are talking about Item 6 in Section 7. Also check Items 5 and 9 for cracks or broken clips My question is am I on the right track? Sounds like a possible cause to me. And in case it doesn't solve the problem, does anyone know the other most common problems for this machine when it leaks? I do not really know the common causes but here is a manual which you may find useful http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/docs/16010373%20(16001145).pdfIf the part does not fix it. I would check the fill level, perhaps it is overfilling. Possible causes of this would be a bad water level switch, a partial plug at the tub end of the pressure tube or a pressure tube with a slow leak. Also I would check that the unit is level. |

If the washer is leaking down the tub during agitation mode it is either a hole in the tub or it is overfilling. That seal shouldn’t leak until spin. This washer starts to spin with water still in the tub. That seal at the top is what keeps the water from spinning out over the tub during spin. If you are getting water past that seal during agitation it is overfilling. You may have a bad seal but even if it were bad it will not leak until spin unless it is overflowing.

Thanks a lot that was really what I was looking for since I would not know where to look if the gasket/ seal doesn't fix it now I have alternate solutions if my idea doesn't work.
Thank you again
