my SUPER SOLID ten-year-old GE TBX1SAXCLWH
Dear All:

What a great website to find after I did the wrong thing (i.e., stupid) by not calling the Repairperson FIRST 4 months before Thanksgiving Eve when my ten-year-old GE tbx1saxclwh 12" Steel refigerator stopped working.. It had been making the Rumbling/Shaking noise at random time with some increase in frequency until louder noises in November. It was replaced by landlord with a 2009 with Sheet Metal GE 9.6cubic foot refrig.

The new one has a 9" freezer and the old one had 20"! (deeper inside and outside) The new one feels creaky and I want to resurrect the old 10 year old GE.

By now the old GE that was better Came Back to Life over the Thanksgiving weekend when I lowered the single refigerator cntrol from the Highestthat I had been running it to level 5 or 6. Cooled and Froze things just fine without the Very loud helicopter/drill-like sound coming from it's insides before it stopped working.

THEN IT WAS DISCONNCTED and now it is way smelly in the basement (9 days down there) GE said no problem, clean it with baking soda and leave baking soda in with dors closed

Does anyone have inputs whether it might be able to successully repair it through cleaning and the $269 compressor replacement and whatever else is needed 'cause they do not make them like this anymore. All of the current ones in this size in this size are cheap sheet metal except for some with stainless steel doors only. Or is that dumb?!

Thank you......

Here are your parts

Does not sound like a compressor problem to me.

Where was the racket coming from?
If inside the freezer sounds like the fan was hitting something.
Could be you had a defrost problem and the fan blade was hitting some ice.

Also ground coffee spread out on a baking sheet in the freezer does a good job of getting rid of odors once you wash the inside thoroughly.

Note: the compressor replacement will probably be closer to $500.00 as it has to be done by a pro and the part is over $200.00.

The sound was coming from the back along with he loud random loud quick rumbling until the helicoper noise started a few times from the inside until it stopped at full level of coolness only to work when i turned it down to level 5 (one temp level switch in fridge only versus freezer+fridge)

but the building replaced it with a Small New GE (9" deep freezer space) GTR10HAXARWW

My frinds are insistng that resurrecting the old Steel one is dangerous as it is so funky smelling and expensive like you say $500-$600 plus 9% tax here in NYC!.......But at least the old one isn't made of sheet metal that dents easily !

Sorry do not quite follow the above.
The evaporator fan is at the back but inside the freezer.
Could be the compressor fan which will not be that expensive to repair.
You have to figure out exactly what is making the racket before you will have any idea on the repair cost.

Not being there I cannot comment on the smell.
I would never put $500.00 into an old fridge, it is just not worth it.
