I'm absolutely astounded. :(

I saved up and bought a brand new Frigidaire refrigerator from Lowe's just over a year ago, and yesterday I went into the freezer and all my frozen food items are mush. Its broke already??

I had my old refrigerator over 12 years (an ancient Kenmore), and it was used when I moved in the house, still running when I wheeled it off and replaced it with "here today, here tomorrow".

I can't quite figure it out.....since I bought the refrigerator I had the setting dead center for the freezer and the refrigerator compartment, and yesterday when the freezer went mush the refrigerator thermometer said "danger zone".
I clicked both settings over colder, and it appears to be holding out at the moment one day later, but this is very unnerving. It appears it is dying.

Is it losing Freon? What could cause a new refrigerator to bomb like this.

I called Frigidaire and first they tried to tell me I had the wrong number, but I told them I was calling the service number printed inside the box. Then the lady put me on hold for awhile and said since I'm past the one year I'm out of luck.

I imagine a service call could cost half the cost of a new refrigerator. I talked to a repairman and he said Frigidaire guaranteed their parts for 5 years, but Frigidaire said no way, go pay a repairman they are no longer responsible.

Can anyone help with advice? Are these new Frigidaires total trash? Assembled in the 3rd world by minimum wage factory slave workers, I am imagining.
I thought this would be a one-time buy..... or at least as long as I lived in the home. I am so, so disappointed..... what a stupid purchase and I don't have the income to make mistakes like this.

Here is the tech sheet

Since just changing the thermostat setting started the unit it sounds like the thermostat stuck open.

Well I managed to get someone from Frigidaire who compromised and said that they would pay for a defective part but not the labor.
At least, I am fairly sure they will.

I wonder if it is in fact a defective thermostat, if I could replace this part myself? Or maybe if it was stuck open, it was a temporary problem. It appears the refrigerator is working at present, albeit at the much colder setting on the dial. But will it stick open again.

is this a digital unit? (it sounds like it). if it is, then don't panic just yet...give it a few days and see what happens. maybe just a power flash or surge confused the board on the unit. I would put the unit back to the normal setting and see what happenes. Frigidair is not a bad unit, or at least no worse than others ad as far as being made in a third world country....hey...8 year old girls have to work too..(that's not real funny is it)?

The thermostat does not close it's contacts when the temperature in the unit rises above set point

I wonder if it is in fact a defective thermostat,
The reason I believe it is the thermostat is:
Low freon - the compressor would have been running trying to lower the temperature and unable to do it because of the low freon. Also changing the thermostat setting would not have had any effect.
Defrost problem - if this was the problem it would not have lowered the temperature just by setting the thermostat lower. You would have had to do a manual defrost to get the unit running correctly.
So a defective thermostat is my best guess.

if I could replace this part myself?
Cannot see why you could not replace it yourself. A thermostat will be about $55.00
This should help explain what is required

Or maybe if it was stuck open, it was a temporary problem. But will it stick open again.
In my opinion it will stick open again and since it can cost you a bundle in spoiled food I would replace it but then I am not much of a gambler.

Note that I cannot guarantee that it is the thermostat but from the symptoms you provided I believe it is at the top of the list as the cause.

Thanks much for the advice. I had a promise from Electrolux they would cover the bum part not labor, at least by phone on Friday, so I will try calling again on Monday and see if they will still honor it.

If so, I will get the part and try fixing it myself. Otherwise I'll tighten the belt and start backreplacing the refrigerator piece by piece.

As far as Frigidaire, I understand they are a major supplier in the refrigerator market, but I wasn't impressed by this at all- in fact my confidence was pretty solidly shaken especially the way they handled the issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good quality refrigerator supplier?
I definitely wont be looking under "F" again. Luckily my stove is Whirlpool but I hope their products aren't contract made in the same Indonesian slave factory, and a different label slapped on it. Their prices are somewhat similar.

Wouldn't it be great if Americans actually made their own appliances? I guess this is no place for that platform- regards jeffpas

It sucks- now only 3 years old- and the compressor is out.
Frigidaire was less than helpful on the phone. Maintenance guys charged to come out look at it-- tried a 3-in-1 Starter- for the Freezer to still not work. Only Frigidaire product I've bought-- It's been loud since I got it. It will be the last one. Sorry you had problems with yours.

Our little old widow lady friend purchased a new Frigidaire refrigerator Model #FRT21IL4FW4 from Lowe's in June of 2010. She got about four months of service out of it before it reared its ugly head. She called Lowe's Service Advantage (LSA) who sent a repairman to the "rescue". He replaced a relay. It started working again - for about two weeks - then it quit. LSA was contacted and they sent the repairman out again. He said he had to order a thermostat and told her to hit on the plastic thermostat housing should the unit quit again. Two weeks later he returned to install the thermostat. Our friend went out of town for a week and asked me and my wife to check on her place. We did and found the contents of the freezer section thawed. I hit on the thermo and it started up again. I checked it daily and hit on the thermo each time to get it started.
I called LSA and requested that the unit be replaced and was told that three repairs for the same issue had to be performed before replacement could take place.
Contacted the local Lowe's where the unit was purchased and I must say that THEY HAVE BEEN VERY, VERY HELPFUL in trying to resolve this matter. As a matter of fact, they have done everything possible to get Frigidaire to replace this malfunctioning unit - TO NO AVAIL.

Lowe's has been GOOD. FRIGIDAIRE IS ANOTHER STORY! ! ! It seems as though a multi-billion dollar company such as FRIGIDAIRE WOULD RATHER SEE A LITTLE OLD WIDOW LADY TAKE A LOSS THAN THEM.

DAT JUST A'INT RIGHT, Y'ALL

I hope I didn't bore you with this. Perhaps if you read this, it might save you some agony. Perhaps you might want to consider purchasing a different brand than what our friend purchased.

Thanks for allowing me vent my frustrations about this.

I recently (6 months ago) purchased 2 new stainless steel Frigidaire Refrigerators from one of the big hardware chains. Both ran approximately 2 months before the insides started to get warm and the ice started melting in the freezer. I also noticed that, even though the compressor was running, there was no air coming out of the bottom by the floor. When the first one started having problems, I pulled it out to see if something had jammed the condenser fan. Sure enough, it was a piece of foam that had been glued to the top of the frame just above the fan. I fell off and jammed the fan. I removed the foam and the fan started up. Refrigerator now operates normally. 2 weeks later the same thing happened to the 2nd refrigerator. Again, I removed the foam that had fallen from above the fan and was jamming it. What are the chances this is unique? None! This is a 100% failure rate on this appliance due to shoddy manufacturing. 2 randomly purchased refrigerators with exactly the SAME problem. Mine were in warranty but I'm posting this to warn others where the warranty has expired.
