Right on top of the duct inlet assembly there is a 1/2" knock out hole. Why is it there? Is it necessary? It allows heat, dust and lint to blow into the back of the housing and into the bottom and into the control panel.

I don't see the knockout on the diagram of your dryer, the only hole is in the back to allow the vent connection.

If you have another hole in the cabinet you can close it off.

The hole is not in the cabinet, it is in the top of the heater duct which runs from the heater to the drum. when I say a 1/2" knock out I mean a hole which measures 7/8". It looks like it might be for a klixon or something but maybe only a vent hole.
Thanks for your help.

The opening does not show up on the diagram of your model, but it is likely a vent hole, unless there are some loose wires around it, in which case in could be the opening for a high limit thermostat or thermal cut off, but again the diagram does not show this.

I would leave it as it is.

Thank you very much for your advice. I was planing on leaving it alone as the dryer has been working for nine years OK. I only noticed it because I had the control panel apart and could look down through the hole in the bottom of control panel and see it. Thanks again and have a great day.
