has any one taken apart a timer and successfully repaired it

Yes but it depends what is wrong with it. You will not know till you open it up. In any case you will have nothing to loose.
Note that it is very important to mark the wires to ebnsure they go back on the timer where they belong.

Contacts that have welded together can sometimes be separated and cleaned.

Sometimes the gearing can be cleaned and re-greased.
