Please Help Me with my Control panel problems! All the cycle selections of the control panel touch pad stopped working. My dishwasher will not run with the 'norm', 'light', 'rinse' or 'heavy wash' touch pad selections. None of these lights come on anymore. It only will function on the 'Auto Wash' touch pad selection. It will probably stop working all together, very soon! Model # MDB8851AWS Any suggestions will help. Thanks, Tommyboy84

Here are your parts Replacement parts for MAYTAG MDB8851AWS10 Undercounter Dishwasher | AppliancePartsPros.comHere is the tech sheet http://www.servicematters.com/d...atic%20-%20W10128608.pdfAll the cycle selections of the control panel touch pad stopped working. My dishwasher will not run with the 'norm', 'light', 'rinse' or 'heavy wash' touch pad selections. None of these lights come on anymore. It only will function on the 'Auto Wash' touch pad selection. Looks like they all use Pin 9 as the common so this may be the problem. Auto uses a different pin. I would do the following connector cleaning. Pay special attention to the ribbon cable Pin 9 track. If this does nothing then I would check the keypad with a meter. If OK then the control board is the likely culprit but is is still a bit of a crap shoot. Connector Cleaning / Checking Unplug the unit Open it up Remove the ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board at the control board. Clean the edge connector. If it is the type where there is not a connector just the insulation is removed, it can be cleaned with a pencil eraser. Do not use an ink eraser as it is too abrasive. Check the tracks in the ribbon cable for hairline cracks. A magnifying glass helps here. Would not hurt to clean the connector on the board. Use electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. Be gentle and do not reconnect till all the solvent evaporates. Reconnect everything and give it a try. |

After cleaning connector and ribbon wire my dishwasher still does as I first described, no led display and no action from any of the 'cycle selection' touch pads except the 'auto clean' pad. No small cracks, ribbon like new!
Here is the interesting observation:
I ran the Field service test after I had cleaned the connections and all the LED's came on as described in the instructions and the 'heavy wash' led is blinking during the test as described. LED's are at least operable.
Any thoughts? Do you know why All the LED's would work during the field test, but not normally? The number 9 pin must be good a connection - correct?
Thanks again, Tommyboy84

Any thoughts? Do you know why All the LED's would work during the field test, but not normally? They work because they are forced on by the program.
The number 9 pin must be good a connection - correct? Does not really tell you as the diags do not include a keypad test. If you run the manual test then you can tell if at least some of the keys are OK, since you have to step to the some tests using the Normal key. |

I ran the Manual test, It worked as described up to the point of the 'Normal wash' Key. It is dead- does not do anything- does not light up. I had to cancel the manual test at that point.
All the cycle keys - don't do anything - other than 'Auto wash' Key...
I'm back to square one.
How do I test the Key pad? I test for continuity between the various pins i.e. Pin 9 - Pin 6 for 'Normal Wash, Pin 9 - Pin 5 for 'Heavy Wash', Etc.? I should have a completed circuit when the correct key is pressed . I would be disconnecting the ribbon from the control board again and taking my measurements at that point.- correct?
Thank You again

I'm back to square one. No you are further ahead as now you know that it is probably the keyboard you just have to double check it.
How do I test the Key pad? I test for continuity between the various pins i.e. Pin 9 - Pin 6 for 'Normal Wash, Pin 9 - Pin 5 for 'Heavy Wash', Etc.? Yes, just be sure your keypad matches the pin-outs I should have a completed circuit when the correct key is pressed . Not pushed should be infinite ohms. Pushed should be 10,000 ohms They do not mention it but it may be polarity dependant so try swapping meter leads on the tracks if you just get an open/infinite. Try the key that you know works first then you will know what to expect.
I would be disconnecting the ribbon from the control board again and taking my measurements at that point.- correct? Yes |

I have filed a class action lawsuit against Whirlpool for their faulty control panels in their Whirlpool and Maytag dishwashers. Please contact my attorney Eppsteiner & Fiorica Attorneys, LLP at 866.548.8857 and let them know if you own or owned a dishwasher with control panel failures.
