Greetings all, my wife was doing a load of laundry in a Whirpool top loading machine, LA7680XTW1, and smelled a burning rubber smell. Went down to check and machine was stopped completely and will not do anything when you try with the dial. She unplugged the machine from the electric outlet. We do have the original manual and cannot afford a new one at the moment. Can anybody help me figure this one out? Thanks much!

I unplugged the washer, let it sit for an hour, reset the controls and ran the washer and it WORKED! I did notice a slight burning odor but very slight. I am happy the washer is working but what about that slight burning odor? Any ideas anyone? Thanks so much people!

Your wife may have overloaded the washer, or you might have brake shoes failing. I would get an amprobe and check the washer input current when it is spining or agitatating. Any current over 10 amps is motor burn out levels.

Thanks Richappy. So I need a device to measure the amps coming into the machine. Never done this before, can you tell me where to test the input amperage? Thanks.

Your power cord comes in behind the control panel, three wires, black, white and green. Clamp the amprobe around either the white or black one.
Also, I would do the tranny coupler test in my "sticky" "replacing direct drive brake shoes", you just might need to replace them.
