Greetings,
This is my first post, thanks for this great forum. I have been troubleshooting this problem of a month or so. Once the dishwasher fills and the pump starts it sounds like a groaning sound, much like a car trying to start on a very cold morning. I have checked to be sure there is no blockage or obstruction in the food grinder and there are no foreign objects in or under the screen area.

I was prepared to order a replacement pump for the unit until I had a bright idea this morning to try something. The pump was sounding like it didn't have enough water in it, like it was operating dry. So I thought that I would add a pitcher of water to the dishwasher after the pump kicked in. Low and behold it ran as quite as a mouse and sounded like it was brand new. I can hear water entering the dishwasher during the fill cycle.

My question is, does anyone have input as to whether it is the inlet gate sticking or is it the float that prevents over flow. The float is free moving. Also 3 or 4 months ago I had to have the electronic panel replaced, the control unit. This problem started shortly after that, may be totally unrelated but wanted to give an accurate as possible picture of what is happening.

Any input would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks

I have model kuds01flss1 thats just over 5yrs old, mine is also making a pulsating groaning noise. I added 4 qts water and the groaning stopped. The groaning noise was the pump cavitating. Is there a fill/over fill sensor or float that could be causing the unit not to fill enough?

Here are your parts

And a tech sheet

Normally dishwashers just fill by time, the float switch is just a safety device to prevent an overfill/flood.

The most common cause of a low fill is a partially clogged screen filter on the inlet side of the water inlet valve.

Remove the kick plate
Shut the water supply off
Get a shallow pan that will fit under the valve
Loosen the inlet hose, let it drip/run till the pan is full, then re-tighten till the dripping stops, empty the pan and repeat till it is empty. Prevents having to mop up the floor.
Remove the inlet hose and check the inlet screen filter.
Odds are good that it is dirty
You may have to remove the valve from the machine to do this.

Do not remove the screen, it is there to keep crud out of the valve which could hold the valve open and cause a flood.

May want to drain some water out of your hot water tank, use either the drain or the pressure release. Let it run till the water is clean. A fair amount of crud can accumulate at the bottom of the tank. I would do this before cleaning the valve filter.

If the screen is clean then perhaps the valve is not opening fully and needs replacing.

Thank you for the info, I will check the screen and have ordered a replacement inlet valve. Since my water heater is a new model and is designed to circumvent sediment from forming in the bottom of the tank coupled with the fact that now when the dishwasher is filling the pipes are making a fog horn sound until I open the hot water faucet in the sink I suspect the valve is not opening fully. I will let everyone know how the replacement goes and if it fixes the problem.

Thanks again for a great forum,
Daniel

I did clean out the filter and I was optimistic because there was a lot of stuff on the screen, but that didn't work. I ultimatly replace the fill valve and that took care of my problem. My dishwasher is back to being very quiet again. Thanks for having this forum, its a great tool.

I had this problem 6 mon ago, replaced the fill valve and it took care of the problem. The problem is back. I cleaned out the filter screen that did have alot of gunk on it and it didn't solve the problem. Just like last time if I add 4qts of water the pulsing noise goes away. Any suggestions other than replacing the fill valve again?
Thx

Very strange.
Also seems that the filter screen got dirty awful fast, especially since you have a new hot water tank.
I wonder if the crud is coming from the inside of the pipes.
Could be that the deposits are flaking off the pipe walls.
I would disconnect the hot water line at the dishwasher and run it into a pail perhaps you have a partial plug in the line or at the shut off.

I am afraid the only other option I can think of is to replace the valve.
This time though I would take the old valve apart to see if you can figure out what is causing it to only partially open.

I would also check that the valve is getting 120 volts when it should.
Low voltage might cause this though it is a long shot.

I'll order anther valve and try and take apart the old one to see if I find anything. I'll let you know if I find anything.

On closer inspection of the fill valve I found some brownish/orange gunk that had gotten past the screen. The opening to the valve is small and I think just this little bit of matter restricted the flow of water. My dishwasher is now getting the right amount of water and is running quite again. I am going to clean/drain my water heater more often and see if I can install a filter on the water line going to the dishwasher that will be easier to clean/inspect. Thank for having is service.
