About a year I changed the motor coupling. Since that time the clothes do not spin out the water that it did before, causing us to increase the drying time. If I rearrange the clothes in the washer so that the weight is evenly balanced the spin cycle comes up to speed nicely and the clothes are somewhat dryer. If I do the spin cycle with no clothes in the washer it spins at even a higher speed. Is there some mechanism that I might have screwed up when I changed the coupling that is causing the unit not spin out at high speed if the load is not perfectly balanced?

I doubt if you did anything to cause the problem. Sounds like a clutch replacement is needed. This site will show you how. Be sure to remove the agitator before trying to remove the transmission. Since you already know how to change out the coupling this should be an easy job for you, but it will take a little time. Clutch Replacement on Whirlpool and Kenmore Washers
