The freezer will slowly stop freezing due to frost/ice build up on the back access panel in the freezer and on the coils behind the panel. This problem began a couple of years ago and every six months or so we would have to manually defrost the freezer by using space heaters / blow dryers to melt the ice. Once everything melted the freezer would cool great. Last March we hired a technician who replaced a defroster type part under the fridge. This took care of the problem until 2 months ago when it began happening again but now it’s every 3 weeks that we have to go through and melt everything with heaters. I love love love this fridge and can't possibly phatom having to go back to a regular top freezer type but there is no way we could afford to buy a new bottom freezer type. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kim Here is the product information: Amana Bottom Freezer Refridgerator Model# BM20TBW MFG# P1305801WW S/N# 9606152514

Here are your parts Replacement parts for AMANA BM20TBW | AppliancePartsPros.comHere are a couple goods sites with fridge repair info http://www.applianceaid.com/refrigerator.html Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.comBasically the defrost has 3 components. Defrost timer - times the defrost cycles once every 8 hours or so. Shuts off the compressor, it's fan and the evaporator fan also turns on the defrost heater. Yours looks like it is mounted at the front behind the kick plate Item 342 in Section 9 Defrost heater - self explanatory Defrost thermostat - This is closed when it is frozen, it opens just above freezing and is wired in line with the heater. A timer may have a defrost cycle of 25 minutes but it may only take 10 minutes to get all the ice/frost off the evaporator coils. The thermostat opens when the frost is gone and stops the heater from adding un-needed heat to the freezer compartment. The timer continues through the defrost cycle and then switches back to cooling mode. Remove the evaporator cover inside the freezer so you can see the coils. Turn the defrost timer cam till the compressor and fans go off, you are now in a defrost cycle. Note the timer only moves in one direction. Check to see if the heater comes on. Be careful do not burn your fingers. Also the coils must be frosted over for it to work. If the heater comes on your timer is probably toast. If the heater does not come on then it is either the heater or the defrost thermostat. Could also be that the contacts in the timer are toast. Disconnect the heater should be around 20 ohms Disconnect the thermostat should be 0 ohms when frozen. |
