The defrost heater coil was burned in half at the bottom of the coil. The coating looked as if it had been molten. I replaced both coil and temperature control. Timer checked ok. At present fridg. is working ok. Anyone had this coil burn-up problem? Could be very dangerous if something combustible was in that location.

Mine just toasted itself too! How do you get the old one out and put the new one in? Did you find step-by-step instructions online? Where did you buy yours? My Frigidaire is model #FRS26ZRGWA.

Turn off power, remove the shelving,take off the panel covering the coils.Heater is a u shape around the coil outside. two aluminium ties,one on each side, hold the top of heater to coil, one sheet metal screw at bottom of coil holds the coil in. Should have four styrofoam pads at the sides,two on each. Remove these pads to let coil and heater free up .now remove ties and bottom sheet metal screw. Unplug the leads from coil ends. Now have to be careful, slowly manuaver the coil out far enough to remove the old heater, be careful not to put too much strain on coil connections, is like a ring puzzle. Just do in reverse to put the new one in.

Thanks for the awesome detail! All of that sounds like my fridge components. I have attached a pic of the coil, etc. I will try it as soon as I get the part. I have to defrost every 2 days until I get it. kneelb4me attached the following image(s):

I was sore for a week after using one hand and arm to get it in.I am a big fellow so was a little rough on me. good luck,:) fmac
