I have to put pressure on the outer ring and manually turn the cycle switch around, when I pull out on the knob it works fine. Any idea what is wrong?

it may be a timer problem. sometimes the plastic holdown bracket that hold the timer in place breaks .you will have to open console to check .sometimes i have replaced the timer+ .knob. +dial altogether
