Hi !

My 19 year old dryer continued to run today w/o the "Auto Dry" timer advancing.:( The dryer was "turned off" by my wife opening the door. Several hours later, I noticed/felt that the dryer was extremely hot on the surface. The door was still open and the dryer was not running, but the timer was still in the on posistion. Is the timer bad ? Thanks !:)

Here are your parts
Replacement parts for MAYTAG DE4000 | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a service manual
http://www.servicematters.com/m...ibrary/docs/16000132.pdf

Take a look at 5-22, the wiring diagram.

You will see that in Auto, the cycling thermostat supplies power through it's normally open contacts to the timer when it opens so odds are high that this thermostat is shot. The normally closed contacts are welded shut.

I am going to modify my answer as I did not pay enough attention to this part of your original post and taking a second look at the wiring diagram.
The dryer was "turned off" by my wife opening the door. Several hours later, I noticed/felt that the dryer was extremely hot on the surface.
If the unit is heating with the door open then you may have a grounded element. The heating element has sagged or broken and is touching the case. You may be able to see this if you remove and inspect the heater. You can check it with a meter by unplugging the unit, removing the two wires from the heater, measuring the heater should be around 10 ohms, then measuring from each heater connector to the frame/case should be an open (infinite ohms).

Please tell me what part(s) I need ? Is the timer OK, and the cycling thermostat the only thing that is bad ?
I cannot tell you with any degree of certainty what part/parts are gone.
You will most likely need a meter to check the different parts to diagnose this correctly.

Is the timer OK, and the cycling thermostat the only thing that is bad
If the timer advances in timed dry but not in Auto then odds are that it is OK and the thermostat is bad. This may also be caused by a grounded element, if it is grounded in such a way that the unit never gets hot enough to activate the cycling thermostat.

I will check for a grounded element this evening, and let you know what I find.

I just checked the heater and found a section of the coiled heating element laying on the bottom of the metal tube that contains the heating coil. What's next ? Is it just a bad heater ? Thanks !!:)

Is it just a bad heater ?
Yes I would say so.

What's next ?
See if there is an obvious reason why it is touching the case re: an insulator has come loose etc. or has it just stretched and sagged over time.
If nothing is obvious then I would replace the heater see below.
Note if you feel able to do it you can also buy just the heating wire and re-string it see below. Doing this will save you about $55.00

Does not really matter other than you cannot fix the element and must either replace the complete heater or just the element/wire.
