Gas dryer heats up for a couple minutes then no heat + gas smell

Hey guys, I'm stumped. I thought I had the answer to my problem (gas coil), but given my symptoms that doesn't make sense (I think).
Dryer has worked fine up to this point for the last 4 years. I believe I've checked all obstructions. Took the back off the dryer to watch what happens. The dryer heats up for a few minutes then the flame goes out and a couple minutes later I can smell the unburned gas. If it keeps running the gas shuts off as well and the dryer will run it's cycle without heat the rest of the way.
If it was a gas coil, no gas would be coming out when it tried to start up again (after the flame cuts out the first time), is that correct? Is it a sensor problem then?
I'm at a loss, any guidance would be much appreciated.

One other note...the timer seems to be louder than normal when it's set on a cycle and the dryer is turned off. It might be that I've never noticed how loud it is, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Almost like a humming noise...again, might be normal and I never paid too much attention to it b/c the dryer worked!

Just bypassed the thermal fuse and I still had the same problem. Trying to narrow down the list of possibilities:
glow bar igniter thermal fuse ------------ xxx coils on the gas valve -- xxx gas valve thermostats motor heat switch timer selector switch sensor
