I have an Amana side by side with a mind of its own. The compressor runs fine, the fan that blows air over the compressor runs fine and everything underneath is spotless. It will run great for any given length of time and then cold air will not come into the freezer and/or the refrigerator. The freezer will be ice cold but no air goes to the refrigerator side or both sides will stop cooling at the same time, but the compressor motor is running. This normally lasts about a day and a half and then everything will run perfect again for about a week, then it happens again. I moved from the U.S to the Dominican Republic for business and it is very very humid here, but there is never water in the tray underneath. I have had repairmen here but this is a third world country and their knowledge is quite limited. This is a great ref. and replaceing it seems like a silly thing to do. Any feedback would be most welcome.

Measure the freezer temperature when it is running "normal".

Keeping your refrigerator cold is a little bit of a challenge here as it is a third world country. Edenorte, the electric company is broke. The average power outage is daily and it is normally 4-6 hours long. Being such, I have to keep the freezer and refrigerator extra cold to outlast the continuous outages. The cold dial goes from 1 to 7. I keep the setting on a constant 7 so as my food won't spoil. The freezer stays at a constant -10 to -20 and when the energy is off, (daily) the freezer temp. will raise to +20. I keep the refrigerator at about +25 to 30. A bit cold but very necessary. Not good for the fruits and vegetables as you can imagine. When the cold air stops, about once a week, the motor is running but no cold air is entering the freezer section or the refrig. side. When this happens, both sides keep a temperature of between +40 TO +50. This will last about 1 1/2 days and then magically, everything will return to normal. Then the same about a week later.

You may be getting a "brownout" when the line voltage goes down. Check to see what items are working, maybe the condenser or evaporator fan stalls due to the loe voltage.

I will check when it happens again. Is there something i can do if this is the case? I cannot use a surge protector here because the houses are not grounded. If I ground the system, would a ups surge protector help?
They do sell surge protectors here that balance the voltage.
