Dishwasher fills fine, then clicks to go to next cycle, but just kind of hums, doesn't appear to spin. Discovered this by opening dishwasher after I thought it was done, there was soap in the bottom of the washer. dishes not clean

Dishwasher fills fine
I am assuming that you opened it up and checked the water level.
If not you may have a water fill problem. there is a screen filter on the input side of the water valve, this can plug or partially plug so the fill sounds OK but you are not getting enough water.

then clicks to go to next cycle, but just kind of hums, doesn't appear to spin.
Open the pump up and see if the filters are clogged, the impeller is attached to the motor shaft etc. Also check that the impeller rotates easily, could be the motor is seized.

I believe tarek is referring to suds. As an example if someone puts dish-soap into the unit by mistake, this creates a lot of bubbles, these then get into the pump and due to the air in the bubbles the pump cavitates and will not pump the water up into the spray arms.
Open the unit up mid wash cycle to see if this is the problem.

Thanks, I'll check the filters, impeller. I'm pretty sure the tub is filling fine because the fill cycle sounds like it always does, but instead of the first cycle after the fill, when you hear the sloshing and spinning after a faint 'click', it just sounds like a stuck motor, the element is hot, the water's in there, cycles all seem to happen minus the arm spinning. I haven't made the mistake of using dish soap since my first semester in college...ha haha! what a surprise!
