The washer really thumping during the spin cycle. The tub was wobbling badly. It looks like one of the springs came off (tub balance spring) - it is hanging on the back support (spring bracket). Where does the other end go?

Thank you.

It looks like 1, 2 and 4; just dangling photo 1. From photo 2 it looks like it needs to be attached to the frame. There is no clip, but a small hole. I easily extended the spring and attached it in the hole. Did I get it right?

Thank you again!
It seems to be working. It is amazing how that spring keeps everything in line. The play in the drum does not seem to be as stiff as it was before - perhaps it is my imagination. We were on vacation and our son was left to his own devices. He has no idea there was a problem and we have no idea how much it thrashed. Is there anything I should be looking for?

Mike, I would examine the outer plastic tub.

I have this model washer and in seven years I've had to put in three outer tubs because for some reason, with all the springs on right, the tub will go so out of balance that the balance ring on the inner tub interferes with and cuts gashes completely through the outer tub, fortunately(?) near the top edge, so very little water escapes. It seems to go out of balance at the end of the spin cycle. I'm putting it back together right now.

The Whirlpool serviceman told me inner tub and balance ring are o.k. (sloshing noises). He couldn't explain why the tubs keep getting cut. Gasket had no sealant. Is sealant recommended? Old gasket looks like new and drive block looks good and tabs are square and engage perfectly. The triangle looked a little off, but the brown sliders look good with very minor flat plateau wear patterns.

Anybody have any hints?
Thanks, James

P.S. Sorry to hijack the tread

P.P.S. Note the prior attempt to repair the tub with silver foil tape. That was a $150 "repair"(?) by a local appliance shop. I'd laugh if I hadn't paid for that...
