Washing load of clothes, wouldn't start spin.
Son took off plate at back and said something frozen up. Did a bit of banging twisting and tried it and it did spin the water out. (we had taken clothes out) He thought it was some type bearing frozen up.
The last couple of weeks before it stopped, there was a noticeable high pitched whine when spinning.
Now when empty it will spin but screeches like a banshee when it stops, and I do mean stop, no coasting.
Called 800 # and they suggested it was transmission. So looking for suggestions. Washer is 8 years old and the drum and cabinet are in worst shape, rust around hinges and on cabinet when open the top, than the 30 year old washer it replaced.
Could see replacing bearings of something like that but don't thing replacing a transmission is worth it.
Any suggestions???
Thanks for your time.

You kind of problem is difficult to diagnose from afar, but given your description I would say that the time has come to replace it.

For little more than the parts would cost you can get a nice, no frills top loading machine that will do a very nice job for you.
