The cener knob broke off years ago... so to get around this problem, I was able to advance the outer indicator wheel portion around by hand to start a wash cycle for each new load. A while back (several months) it failed to spin and drain, but the full cycle would complete with the tub full of wash water. I found that if I left the lid open until it stopped at the spin/darain cycle, I could close the lid at that point and it would spin/drain fine. A few days ago it would not always even work that way and it was not spinning or draining, just making a buzzing or humming sound when it reached the spin/drian cycle. So I advanced the cycle indicator around by had to a new cycle, then I noticed a burning smell (seemed like a circuit boaard electronics smell). The washer would not do anything at this point...I unplugged the entire unit from the wall socket. Any ideas on the part that needs to be replaced?

Well, I am going to say that you definitely need a new timer, but before doing anything you need to check out the coupling and the transmission.
Here is a video which will show you how to take your cabinet off and check things (You do not need to disconnect the pump, just tie it off to the left).
See if your coupling is ok, and if you can turn the transmission shaft from the place where the coupling goes on. If not, I would say replacing the machine is the best option.

Thanks for the response! I have done some more troubleshooting since my original post... I opened the washed case and can now hear the humming sound is coming from the area of the motor. I pulled back the pump and popped off the motor, but left it connected electrically. When I advanced teh timer to a spin cycle the motor still does not turn even though it is mechanically disconnected from everything else. So it would apear that the motor is toast... or could it be the start capacitor for the motor? Also is there any way of telling if the timer circuit is still ok? If I buy a motor it is probably not returnable ...
