I get too much water coming to the ice maker when the system calls for water and it leaks into the ice bin causing that ice to freeze together. The cubes come out the correct size so I know the maker is working fine. Is there a regulator that can be adjusted to decrease the amount of water flow or to turn off the solonoid sooner?

You might have to change the ice maker.

I don't see where that makes any sense. the water hose comes thru the back of the fridge and into the freezer and just lays in the ice tray. it's not connected there to anything, just laying in a designed holder on the ice maker. nothing there in the ice maker regulates the amount of water coming in. Why would the ice maker need to be replaced? i would still get too much water coming thru the hose, wouldn't I?

You need to pop off the end cap on the ice maker itself. You can pry it off easily with a screwdriver, you will see two small slots big enough to fit a flat head on the bottom of the cap. The end cap faces out, no need to dismantle the ice maker or remove it from freezer. you will see a screw with a + and - sign go towards - one turn at a time. good luck
