hello this is a kenmore bottom freezer/top refrig model #596.71103101 when the compresser starts it makes a buzzing noise for about 4 to 5 seconds then it stops ,the compresser never actually runs, but it does try to start and it keeps tryin until i unplug it.could the start relay and/ or the copacitor be bad?

thank you

yes this sound like a defective relay/overload if this unit use a capacitor change this also, these new relay/overloads don't seem to last as long as the previous ones, after you change these your compressor should start, if it does the same thing then unfortunately your compressor is damage.

OEM start relay / overload ( clixon ) may indeed be defective... probably best to get a "hard start kit" which will give the compressor a big boost using a capacitor to overcome the inertia of the compressor.. if that works then slowly contemplate a replacement refrige for when the compressor eventually dies in the future. If it doesn't get the compressor started, you could buy a new refrige. Remember, compressors are covered by the manufacturer for the first 5 years , parts and labor !!!
