The freezer goes from 0 to 45 or 50 degrees, then the refirerator goes up to 50 degrees. After about 20 minutes the whole cycle reverses and temps settle again. I cleaned compressor coils, but still the same. A fan placed at side and aimed at frezzer back seems to help it cool back faster. Leaving the cover off the back after cleaning the coils seems to help also.
Should I check for defrost ice first?
Thanks!

Take notice when it is not working. See if the compressor is working or not. Often with these refrigerators I see the main cause the compressor to intermittently work. Usually both fans will continue to run when the compressor stops. If the fans and all cut off you may have a different problem. Refrigerator repair guide

Yes, I remember the fans (compressor and freezer) keep running even when the compressor isn't......does that mean it's a bad compressor? Is it worth trying a new start relay, I did hear some clicks when the compressor wasn't working....?
Thanks again!

I am sorry I meant to say in the first post that the main board is causing this problem. I don’t think it is the start relay or the compressor because it is working intermittently.

OK, thanks for that update. I watched it closely and found that I could trick it into working correctly for at least 12 hrs. by setting the desried temperature button (unlocking it) to 0 or -1 for the freezer. Then, after 12 hr.s or so, it will start with just the fans running and the temp starts to rise to 45 again. I look in the bottom back of the freezer and can't see any ice, even when the freezer is cold, so I guess that rules out defective defrost (?).
Does my experiment confirm a bad motherboard?
Many thanks again!

This doesn’t necessary confirm that the board is bad although I think that is your problem.

About the only easy way to confirm it (other than just replacing it) is to disconnect the power from the refrigerator remove the main board and look at the back of the board. Once removed you can check for burnt spots on both sides of the board. If it is just a bad solder joint you can try to repair the joint if you are experienced in this sort of thing but I would personally recommend changing the board.

Note that if you do not see a burnt spot it still say the main board is the most likely problem.

Another thing you could try is while it is not working take the cover off the main board (careful not to touch anything there are live wires in there) and tap on the larger black relays on the bottom of the board with the handle of you screwdriver or something. If when you do this the compressor comes on that will confirm that the main board is bad.

Again if it doesn’t I still say the main board is probably the problem.

Basically if the fan near the compressor is running the compressor should be running and if not it is either the main board or the compressor start relay and start relays do not typically intermittently work. They either work or don’t work. It could possibly be the overload but they give very little trouble I don’t think it is causing your problem.
