Model # 110 70712990. Dryer continues to run through all the timer cycles. I set timer for 20 minuets, timer advances and dries clothes, timer advances to off, dryer turns off, timer continues to advance through off position, timer advances and the dryer turns back on, runs through next cycle, turns off, timer advances again, dryer turns back on. The dryer stops when the door is opened or the dryer is unplugged.

I am both somewhat amazed and completely apologetic. Unforturnately using a Forum like this for repair involves what economists term tradeoffs. If you have a service tech visit, you will get your machine repaired, but at a cost of $150.00 to $250.00 in your situation. If you get a recommendation from a Forum you will spend a lot less, but there is not a guarantee your machine will get repaired. We may not have the correct diagnosis, you may not put the part in correctly, or the replacement part may be defective.

In this case I don't think you put the part in incorrectly, and I doubt if the replacement part was defective. That leaves us with an incorrect diagnosis for which I apologize and I am sorry you spent the funds unnecessarily.

That being said, we still have your dryer to fix. I am thinking you may have two problems, a short in the wiring to the timer motor and a bad push to start switch. The way your dryer timer works is that there is a small motor in the timer that is powered by electricity. When you engage the timer the motor powers up and turns the timer gears which go through various sets of electrical contacts and operate your dryer according to plan. When the dryer gets to the off position, the circuit is broken and electricity no longer goes to the timer motor and the timer stops advancing.

Obviously in your case the timer motor in the timer is continuing to get electricity even after the dryer reaches the off position. This suggests that the problem is in the wiring to the timer motor, but that wiring comes through the timer, which is why the first thoughts are that the timer was bad. Well,unless the second timer is bad you somehow have power getting to the timer motor independent of the timer, and you are just going to have to trace that wiring to find out how that is happening.

Now the second problem is that after your timer advances to the next cycle the dryer comes on. This definitely should not happen, because even if the timer advances to a start position, the dryer will not come on unless the push to start switch is pushed, which is not happening. Now the way your push to start switch works is kinda interesting. When you engage the push to start switch, electrical current working through a coil inside the switch keeps it closed even after your release the start knob and it returns to its rest position. When current stops going to the start switch, the electricity through the coil stops and a spring makes the switch disengage. This is why your dryer stops when the timer gets to the off position.

Now obviously the push to start switch is remaining engaged, so that when the timer gets to the new cycle the dryer turns on. This suggests either a bad push to start switch, or problems in the wiring between the varous components and the push to start switch.

Therefore I suggest you replace the push to start switch, as it is an inexpensive item and replacing it will take it out of the equation. If that fixes the problem, great, if not you are going to have to trouble shoot your wiring starting from when it comes into the dryer from the outlet.

Well, I hope this helps, and I wanted to explain what is going on as much as possible so you would understand why the timer was suggested and the rationale for the next steps.
