I installed a replacement gasket for my refrigerator (part no 12550113Q) and the door will not close. It acts like the magnetic strip is not strong enough.

When they ship these gaskets they fold them up and ship them in a small box. So they end up way out of shape. There are a few things to do to help with this. First off (it is too late for this) completely submerge it in hot water for a few minutes. Once it is installed heat the gasket with a hair dryer in the places were it is not sealing working it in shape. Once the gasket is in shape apply a thin layer of Vaseline around the entire gasket. Also there are two cams between the door and the hinge one of these cams may be broken. This would cause the same problem. Refrigerator Door Repair Guide

Is the layer of vaseline applied between the gasket and the door or on the underside of the gasket?

By heating the gasket with the hairdryer, will the magnet adhere to the refrigerator door for a better seal?

Apply the Vaseline between the gasket and the refrigerator (to help it seal). But don’t do this until you get the gasket sealing fair. You need to heat the gasket in the places that the gasket isn’t sealing properly. In other words if the gasket is touching on part of the door and not on other parts of the door heat the places that it is not touching. While you heat the gasket try to pull it into shape.
