I have a MAYTAG RSD2200DAE that I use as my 2nd refrigerator in my garage. Lately the refrigerator would not cool enough and eventually even the Freezer would stop cooling. When I looked in the freezer compartment the whole back panel (in the Freezer) would be completely frosted up.
I am pretty sure sure that my defrost timer is out (part # 68233-2). I cannot find a detailed schematic of the refrigerator can anyone tell me where the defrost timer is located so I can replace it?
Does anyone think I may not be on the right track simply replacing the defrost timer (if I can ever find it)?:o

Does anyone think I may not be on the right track simply replacing the defrost timer (if I can ever find it)?:o The defrost timer should be located behind the panel where the fresh food and freezer controls are. Certainly could be the timer, but there is also a defrost termination switch and defrost heater involved. To check it out properly, a volt/ohm meter needs to come into play.

Frank,
Thank you for directing me to the location of the Defrost Timer, I will check it out 1st. If replacing it does not work then I will look at the Defrost Heater (Radiant Heater). From what I can gather I will find heater on the back of the unit. I have a volt/Ohm Meter. Any suggestions on directing me as to what I should do to determine whether I have a faulty Timer or Heater?

The heater and the terminator will be located behind the freezer wall where you're seeing the frost build up. If you manually turn the small knob on the timer you'll hear it click, that will put it into the defrost mode. If you happen to have the freezer wall removed when you do this, you should be able to tell if the heater starts to get hot. If that's the case, you probally do have a bad timer. If the heater doesn't come on then you'll need to remove power from the Refrig and ohm out the heater and the terminator. If the heater is open then it's bad. The terminator will only give you a reading if it's still cold enough when you check it.

Secondly, when you say, "The Heater and the Terminater" I know what the Heater is. Is the Terminator the Thermostat?

Secondly, when you say, "The Heater and the Terminater" I know what the Heater is. Is the Terminator the Thermostat? Yes you get to the heater and defrost thermostat (terminator/bi-metal) through the freezer section. No access from the back of the Refrig.
