Typically problem with Kenmore bottom freezer/fridge. (Icing up. Fridge not cold).I replaced the defrost timer as I thought that was the issue. Nope-so I replaced the defrost heater middle of last week. It's icing up again. So what is my next step? Is it the thermostat or ??

Thanks in advance

Did you test these items before replacing them? Force a defrost by turning the defrost timer until the compressor and fans stop. Look at the evaporator to see if the heater is actually working. If it is, restart the unit, or just wait until the defrost mode completes, then look to see if the evaporator fan is working. When the compressor is on, BOTH of the fans are supposed to also be running.

I thought I did but obviously I was wrong. (per other posts I read) I did turn the defrost timer and the fan stopped. So I figured that was the problem. Replaced the timer. Didn't fix the problem. Then I figured it was the defrost heater itself since when I started the defrost cycle the heater element didn't heat up. I replaced the heater and not it looks like it is icing up again. I didn't check the continuity since I was a little apprehensive about doing it and didn't have a tester. My mistake! So my question is what is my next step? Check the continuity, check the thermostat or just kick the freezer real hard and call it a day?

Kicking it may help you vent some frustration, as long as the wife doesn't see you do it. I would place it in defrost and visually check to see if it's heating. You'll be able to feel the heat if it works. Look at the bimetal (thermostat). if you're not getting power to the heater, the thermostat can be the problem. We often replace them as a pair. If it looks swollen, it needs to be replaced.

Actually I'm a women so the wife wouldn't mind! :)

I'll check the thermostat and see if it's swollen. I know when I put the new defrost heater on (and when I checked the old one) it did not heat up. I hope it's the thermostat.

Thanks for the reply.

The frist thing to change in a defrost probl is the defrost thermost(bi-metel). what made thank it was the timer.
