Freezer stays in defrost mode / then only lower portion cool properly

The freezer has been staying in defrost mode too long. First noticed when all ice melted. All coils and condenser have been checked and seem to run after turning fridge off for awhile, then back on. After awhile, however, we notice that the fridge is getting warm again, mainly the top portion. The lower part of the freezer and fridge are cooler. Food in freezer stays frozen at bottom of freezer, but items in refrigerator get too warm. Very puzzling. Help is appreciated. We have a 40+ year old fridge that won't hold much, but still cools well. I guess they don't make them like they used to!

After I noticed the Orange glow emminating from the back of the Freezer last night. I know for sure GE must have a bunch of idiots employed.
Tell me who would make a Fridge/freezer that would allow "Defrost" and "*Freeze" (*regular operation mode) to run simataniously?
Now I need to figure out how to turn off Defrost..
My point I should not even be in this situation.

If it defrosts and cools at the same time, you have a bad defrost control located behind the control panel in the fridg. Order it here AP3110896

Look for a recessed knob in the control panel, turn it till it clicks. Should go into defrost, but with a shorted control, probably not.

Man the fridge is junk... It Was here when I moved in. Never had a knob for the defrost... Thank to the placement of the knob. It must have been sheared off. When someone put an item on the top shelf. Silly them. What I ended updoing was. Cutting on of the hot (voltage)wires that went into the heater element. Isulated the wire ends and put it back togeather. In short I cut a wire to the element. Is this going to solve my problem? I ask because It still seems a bit warm on the front sides.? richappy vbmenu_register("postmenu_114782", true); I really appreciate you help. Selvol
