I bought a used refrigerator that had the compressor replaced under warranty. After I got it home and plugged it in it didn't cool very well even though I turned it all the way up to 7. The refrigerator motor never shuts off. I noticed a bad smell coming from under the refrigerator. I can see black gunk in the defrost pan and around the heater coil. I don't know if it is spoiled residue from when the refrigerator failed at the previous owner(spoiled milk- etc. that might have drained through the bottom of refrigerator into the pan). It almost smells like urine. Could it be the freon oil from the replaced compressor? My question is this something I can clean out myself. I have taken the front panel off and the heater coil keeps the pan from coming out easily. The sealed components are under warranty for just 1 more month so I have arranged for a service call to see why the fridge is not cooling. I have turned off the refrigerator until the service guy gets here because the smell is so bad that when it is running the room that the fridge is in smells like an outhouse! I know the repairman will want the refrigerator to have been running when he gets here to he can check it out. If you can tell me how to get the pan out to clean it I would appreciate it. It was changed just before I bought it. The refrigerator came out of an apartment building. The building owners noticed that the warranty was still good for 2 months so they had an appliance repair shop change the compressor. I bought it for $200.00. It doesn't cool so I have a repairman coming tomorrow to look at it. It has 1 more month on the warranty. The other problem is the foul smell coming from the pan under the refrigerator. The pan seems to be impossible to remove so I put a bleach solution in it and it has at least removed the stench for the time being. It seems the refrigerator manufactures should make the drain pan easier to remove and clean. This fridge is refrigerator only with no freezer. The defrost mechanism doesn't seem to been needed often & the likelihood of spilled product seems more likely. I think I will redirect the drain hose away from the pan. The refrigerator is only a beer & pop fridge & is in my laundry room with a floor drain right next to it.

Do you have to tip the refrigerator on its side to remove the pan? Their must be screws holding the heater coil to the pan. What a h.s. design. Mike
