I bought a used refrigerator that had the compressor replaced under warranty. After I got it home and plugged it in it didn't cool very well even though I turned it all the way up to 7. The refrigerator motor never shuts off. I noticed a bad smell coming from under the refrigerator. I can see black gunk in the defrost pan and around the heater coil. I don't know if it is spoiled residue from when the refrigerator failed at the previous owner(spoiled milk- etc. that might have drained through the bottom of refrigerator into the pan). It almost smells like urine. Could it be the freon oil from the replaced compressor? My question is this something I can clean out myself. I have taken the front panel off and the heater coil keeps the pan from coming out easily. The sealed components are under warranty for just 1 more month so I have arranged for a service call to see why the fridge is not cooling. I have turned off the refrigerator until the service guy gets here because the smell is so bad that when it is running the room that the fridge is in smells like an outhouse! I know the repairman will want the refrigerator to have been running when he gets here to he can check it out. If you can tell me how to get the pan out to clean it I would appreciate it. (Or should I just wait for the repairman?) Thanks Mike Friemann

Why would the manufactures of the refrigerator run a drain hose from the interior of the fridge to a pan that cannot be easily cleaned by the owner? Mike

The heat from the compressor evaporates the water.....

When was the compressor changed?

That is it, maybe even blood frozen meat that thawed out.

It was changed just before I bought it. The refrigerator came out of an apartment building. The building owners noticed that the warranty was still good for 2 months so they had an appliance repair shop change the compressor. I bought it for $200.00. It doesn't cool so I have a repairman coming tomorrow to look at it. It has 1 more month on the warranty. The other problem is the foul smell coming from the pan under the refrigerator. The pan seems to be impossible to remove so I put a bleach solution in it and it has at least removed the stench for the time being. It seems the refrigerator manufactures should make the drain pan easier to remove and clean. This fridge is refrigerator only with no freezer. The defrost mechanism doesn't seem to been needed often & the likelihood of spilled product seems more likely. I think I will redirect the drain hose away from the pan. The refrigerator is only a beer & pop fridge & is in my laundry room with a floor drain right next to it.

You will also want to clean the drain tube as it will have the same junk in it.

Do you have to tip the refrigerator on its side to remove the pan? Their must be screws holding the heater coil to the pan. What a h.s. design. Mike

I am the Facilites Manager for a church in Roanoke VA. Our Kitchen had a horrible smell theat we couldn't track down. Finally we realized it was coming from under the refrigerator which we have two of the same Gibsons. It was where blood from turkeys at Thanksgiving had gotten down through drain tube into condenstaion pan and this is July so that is how long it has been there and now started stinking. I slid refrigerators away from wall and pulled the black drain tube off and took to sink and ran hot water through till all gunk came out. I then removed bottom shelf and poured bleach water down drain at back of refrigerator. Then I put tube back on and blew air back up through to make sure it was completely open. The pan was tricky to figure out at first I took the front bottom cover off and removed four screws that I thought held the pan on but then I realized the pan just snaps in and out from under refrigerator if you pull forward and down on the front it will come out then when you're ready just hook it back on at the back and push it back up and it snaps back on. It is easier if you have someone that can tilt the refrigerator back for you while you get under it to work on this process.
