My small stackable apartment size Whirlpool washer completes the full wash cycle, shuts off and then I hear a motor humming and the tub fills with hot water. I had to unplug it to stop the water. When I plugged in again, the water stops flowing in. Any idea what's wrong?

It happened twice in permapress cycle and then I tried the gentle cycle which was okay. I haven't tried the regular or other cycles. Should I??

I ran the washer in the general cycle and it kept filling with hot water until it overflowed (before it went into the rinse cycle). I realize now that the problem is that the hot water keeps flowing in even after the washer finishes and turns off. If I turn off the hot water line at the wall, the noise stops, so it wasn't a motor I thought I heard, just the hot water coming in. If I turn off the hot water and run it with only cold, it sems to work okay. Any ideas what is going on? Why does the hot water keep flowing in? Yesterday, my wife unplugged the unit to get it to stop filling with hot water. I really appreciate your help. Joel

I tried unplugging the unit again and it does not stop the problem--the hot water keeps flowing in. If I turn off the hot water anmd just run cold water, the machine seems to be working okay. Any ideas?? Thanks, Joel

I can definitely tell you that your water inlet valve is fouled by debris in the water, and needs to be replaced. It's your description of the noise you hear that doesn't fit the water valve problem, unless, by coincidence, the timer is also bad. If you hear a faint hum with the water filling, that means the solenoid in the valve is receiving voltage from the timer.
One other component in the fill circuit to check is the level switch. When the selected water level is reached, this switch will simultaneously energize the timer motor to advance the timer, and de-energize the water valve. It works by air pressure applied to an internal bellows, or diaphragm, to activate the switch. What usually goes wrong with this component is obstruction or restriction of the air tube connected to it. This most frequently occurs where the tube connects to the tub. This is a common cause of overfilling, but is interrupted when the machine is unplugged. You should check to make sure the air tube is free of lint or other particles, and also free of any kinks or restriction.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I sent a follow up message yesterday to say that the noise that I thought was a motor seemd to stop when I turned off the hot water, so the problem seems to be the water fill valve per your description. Can it be cleaned if debris got in it? The water was shut off in my apartment building last week and now I am suspecting debris got in the valve when the water was turned back on. How do I locate the valve and can I clean it out? If not, what part do I need and is it a difficult job to install. I have no experience doiung this. Thanks again. Joel

My model # LC4900XT is not listed on the parts site as one of the models for this part. I'm not doubting you but want to be sure before I order the part. Also, can you tell me how to install this myself-does it require plumbing skills? How do I locate the valve once I get the machine opened? Any advice about how to do it would be greatlyu appreciated. Thanks again for all your help. Joel
