My dryer has stopped heating and the repair person has temporarily repaired the heating coil. He says it would cost $160 to replace the coil. The dryer is about 5 years old, is it worth investing that type of $?

That's a dangerous repair to fix a heating coil, may short out to the housing. A heater is about $50 and labor around $50- $75 depending on your area.
