When I press the ice maker button on the control panel I hear a loud grinding noise. To stop it I open the freezer door. The ice shoot is not clogged. The auger is not frozen. The u-shaped gear behind the ice making unit turns freely. The sound seems to be coming from the control panel itself.

This sounds like it may be the solenoid that opens the door flap to let the ice out the chute. It may be sticking and not opening. Part 13 on diagram 3 includes the solenoid. Replacement parts for MAYTAG MZD2766GEB | AppliancePartsPros.com

remove the cover by gently prying it starting at the bottom.
