Frig stopped working after power surge to house. Replaced relay and overload on compressor, and frig worked fine for three days after plugging it back in. Then, same problem all over again, compressor would not come on and no cooling or freezing. Unplugged frig for a few hours, and when plugged it back in it worked fine. After about seven days frig stopped again. Again, unplugged it for a few hours and it worked fine after plugging it back in. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem.

Do you still have the old relay? If you do shake it and if it doesn’t rattle it probably wasn’t bad to start with.

When the compressor is not working do both of the fans work? If both of the fans work and the compressor doesn’t and the relay is not bad the main board is bad. If when the compressor is not working the fans don’t either post back and we will go from there, if you have and are comfortable using a voltage tester. Refrigerator repair guide

Thank for the response. Don't have the old relay. Only slight noise when you shook it. Parts store rep said probably bad as a result of power surge. Fans, lights and water dispensor all work. Just compressor that seems to be stopping, which will also restart after unplugging frig for few hours. I do have a volt meter and no problems with using.
Again, thanks.

I think it is the main board especially since you already replaced the relay.

I don’t even think the start relay could be your current problem (may have been your previous problem) because I have never seen one go bad intermittently.

I took the main board off today to check it, and on the back side there was a clear sign of a burn spot. About a half inch in diameter brown spot. Also, a little brown residue on the back of the frig, where it flared up. I agree with you, that the main board has to be replaced. I've also removed the defrost heater to check it for continuity, and to see if its working.
Thanks, again.
