My washer has a strong smell while in the wash and spin modes. It doesnt smell like electrical more like a burnt car clutch or rear end gear burning(it is coming from the bottom of the machine). I took it out today and I have a small amount of fluid build up on the coupler which has the same smell (no other appearent fluid leaks or build ups). I cant tell if this fluid came from the motor or the transmission, I am suspecting the transmission. Any inputs? Also if I have to change the transmission does the drive shaft just slide out or is it clipped up in the clutch area? The machine operates fine just has that smell.

Odors and noises are the hardest things we deal with in a Forum because we aren't there to smell or hear what is going on, which is the first diagnostic.
Sounds like your transmission might be leaking. If you want to examine it, to take it out, first take off the agitator. Then take off the pump, motor, and coupling. Three bolts hold the transmission in and after you take them out, carefully slide the transmission out and inspect it.

Thank you for the reply, is there a seal on the motor side that can go bad? The fluid I have on the couple is thick and smells like gear lube. I know the motor shafts have internal lube but it always reminded me of common grease. If the trans is leaking can that be fixed or is it a replacement?

The general recommendation is that you replace the transmission with a new unit. I have seen posts on some sites where folks have attempted, (in some cases successfully) to repair one, but I think that was more for the challenge then to save money. If it were me I would replace it with a new one and be done with it.

I figured that was the case since I didnt see a seal on the parts list. Ok I will order a transmission and go from there! Thank you again for the responses.
