My Kenmore dryer will stop in mid-cycle and then will restart after a few minutes. It does this sporadically and the clothes are getting dry. I this a problem with a thermostat?

If the motor makes a bad noise when starting, it's got bad bearings and needs to be replaced

Check your timer for burnt contacts, symptom would be gaps in the timer when you turn it or wiggle the timer knob. If it takes a few minutes till you can get the motor running=bad motor shutting down on it's thermal overload. You can confirm this by bench testing the motor with 115 volts to pins 4&5
