Yes, it does sound like a refrigeration problem such as short on gas, stopped up capillary tube, stopped up dryer or bad compressor. On some models these are under warranty for five years, check your owner’s manual. While I support do-it-yourselfers this is a job for the professionals. If it is under warranty you must contact GE or a GE dealer to do this repair.

I scheduled a service call with GE service for Monday. I'll be calling in sick to work so I'll be there when the ge service tech shows up. will let you know what the tech comes up with and will let you know. maybe this will help somebody else with a similar problem with their ge unit. I did call the service tech who did come out and melted the ice off of the rear wall, and he said that it did sound like a refrigeration problem, but he wasn't authorized to work on possible ge warranty repairs. looks like my daughter is out of $75.00 , but he did say to give him a call if there was any other services on this unit.......................... as if I'll call him for service again.

Latest Update: GE service tech came out today. was ready to replace the control board until I told him what symptoms I was seeing. He ordered a new evaporator and a new compressor. Said that GE is now telling their service techs to replace both the evaporator and compressor at the same time. It's under their 5 year warranty, so parts and labor are free :). only bad part is they won't be here and installed until next week, since he had to order the parts directly from GE.

Glad to hear it is under warranty and you are getting it fixed. Just wish we could have figured it out before you call the other service tech.

Latest update: the GE service tech came out today to install the condenser and evaporator. after installing them, he informed me that there is a leak in the lines and the unit is not repairable. since this model is no longer sold, he has given me the choice of replacing it with a new unit, model PFSS2MJXSS, or I can choose another model from GE. so I guess I'll be getting a new unit from GE at no cost to me. at least the tech came out and admitted that the unit couldn't be repaired

Save the board you just installed because it will be the same one on the new refrigerator and they go bad often. You never know when you might need it!
