Today I turned my oven on to preheat for 15 minutes. When I went to check on the oven, the kitchen smelled strongly of gas and the oven was not hot. It was slightly warmer than it had been in the off position. I am wondering if it is worth it to replace the ignitor or to just get a new range. I just called Whirlpool and learned that my range is 23 years old and the average life-span of a range is 15 years. Any advice/assistance would be appreciated!

$45 for a new ignitor vs $500-$1000+ for a whole new range? Let me think... not.

I doubt you'd even get 15 years out of most new models.

If your range has lasted 23 years without any major problems, there's a very good chance it will last longer yet. If the rest of the appliance is still in decent shape than putting such a minimal repair into it is a no brainer IMO.

Even if you just repaired it while waiting for a great deal to come along on a new appliance it would probably be worthwhile. That way you wouldn't be rushed into making a big purchase decision and might even be able to get a couple of bucks selling a working old appliance.

But the decision is totally up to you (and whomever is going to be paying for the new appliance).
