Yes it could be the idler.
To confirm put a couple drops of oil on the shaft.
If it quiets down then you know for sure.

Also check your motor bearings and the blower wheel assembly.

My Maytag dryer, model MDET236AYW started making a loud squealing noise recently. So far I have replaced the 2 front glides and felt pads, the 2 rollers in the back and both felt drum seals. Well, guess what? It still squeals as bad as it did before I replaced all this stuff. I inspected the idler pulley, and I noticed it has some slack in it. Could this be the cause of this repetitive obnoxious squealing?? I have read in several other blogs about this problem, and some of them indicate that the idler pulley was indeed the culprit. I refuse to pay a repairman a bunch of cash when I am capable of doing it myself. Also, the motor was replaced about a year ago, so I am assuming it isnt the problem. HELP!!!!!!!
