My Amana washer is a single belt drive and it stopped working the other day. I saw the belt look really bad so I replaced and still the same problem. What happens is when it goes to spin it has to work up to its speed and then it kicks our because its working to hard. When it agitates I think it working ok. We need help, six kids and lotsa laundry = crabby momma.

It may be your brakes, or something caught between the basket and tub or even the transmission itself. Hard to say, but unless this is a very new model I would consider changing it out as these types of repairs on Maytags are pretty expensive and difficult.
If you need more info, please post a full model number.
