Hello all, have a question about my washing machine. During the spin cycle, it is making a really loud whining noise that I can only compare to a jet engine. The noise gets louder the faster the tub spins which leads me to believe it's a bearing or pulley failure, but there are probably several and don't know which to change. I also noticed a strange smell after doing a load of clothes recently. I'm thinking that what ever is making the noise is also causing undo stress on the belt. Any help would be appreciated.

It probably is the bearing, which Maytag redesigned. Unfortunately this is a difficult repair that requires special tools. If you want to try it, contact Maytag and see if they will let you have access to the tech bulletin on this repair. They have closed their site to the public so I cannot link it to you.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid that I would read something just like that. I fully expected the bearing to be difficult at best to change and nearly impossible without the proper tooling. I may contact Maytag, but I have a feeling that will get me nowhere. Sounds like a replacement might be in order.
