I see all the posts for washers that will not this or that, but cannot find my symptom.

It will not spin.

Drains fine.

Tipped it and looked underside. Belt is fine, and spins. So does the pulley under the barrel.

When off, barrel is difficult, near impossible to spin by hand.

Perhaps clutch, or brake?? (Is there one??)
Can I change this myself?:)

Tip the machine enough to be able to get comfortably under it. Have a friend help you with this. Remove the belt. Rotate the large white pulley one direction. Have your friend confirm the agitator is moving. Turn it the other direction. Have your helper see if the spinner is spinning.

If not, you may need to replace the thrust bearing assembly. In proper operation, it releases the brake by cam action, to allow the transmission to spin the basket. Removing the thrust bearing and the brake will confirm this is the cause.

If the basket won't spin with the brake removed, the problem is in the transmission.

Let us know if you get to the point of the process where you need to remove the brake, and we'll help you with that. Don't attempt to remove the brake without the proper guidance. It has a spring under 200 lbs pressure, and can hurt you.

Based on your suggestion, here is what did....

Removed belt.
Grabbed large pulley (directly below drum)
If I spin it clockwise (as viewed say, by a bug on the floor), the
agitator moves.
But when I spin it counterclockwise....nothing happens.

If it's worn (the bearing, that is), it won't release the brake enough to allow a spin. This is very common.

If there is a dust cap in the center of the pulley, remove it. Without removing the e-clip from the shaft, try to wedge a small-tipped screwdriver between it and the washer on the bearing. Try to (slowly) rotate and see if the basket spins.

I see the dust cap in the center, and removed it. I see the e-clip, but not sure where I am to wedge small screwdriver. ...and then when you mention rotate and see if the basket spins....you mean rotate the pulley again, with the screwdriver wedged in somewhere??

Yes. Rotate it while the screwdriver is wedged between the e-clip and the first washer on the shaft (like you're trying to pull the shaft outward toward the floor).

I cannot get a screwdriver between the e-clip and the washer. I even tried to first use a small jewelers screwdriver to open it the smallest amount and move on to a larger screwdriver...but there is no budging between the two.

OK....Using a BIG screwdriver, I went to the open end of the C-clip. I caught the screwdriver into the groove of the shaft (made for the C-clip) and lifted up on the washer.
Holding it in this position, I turn counterclockwise, and the drum turns!

That's great news. Here's the part (kit) you need. Not too expensive, A bit of a buggar to install, but NOT out of your mechanical abilities.

Part number: AP4009132

OK, I will order now. I see it comes with instructions, which I will follow. But can you give me a quick version of what I will be doing? I suspect remove the C clip, and start pulling stuff down. But being under 200 pounds of spring pressure, when pulling out the spring clip, does the shaft or something shoot out like a rifle bullet?? Should I gather up any special tools while waiting for order to arrive??
Thanks again!

....Dave
