Maytag dryer made by Whirlpool works fine until it advances into cool down. At that point it runs forever and has to be shut off manually. It does this on both auto dry and timed dry. Before I replace timer any other causes of this problem?

Looking at the wiring diagram the timer would seem to be your problem,

but disconnect and clean the timer terminals and spin the timer knob a number of times and see if that helps before you replace the timer.

My Whirlpool is doing the same thing. But I did replace the timer and it's still doing the same thing.

It's not the timer. This usually happens when the heat element coil on this style of made by Whirlpool dryer has a broken coil. My YouTube video here explains it, but the dryer uses the element as a resister to run the timer motor during the cool down section of the cycles. Thats what the orange wire on side of lower thermostat sends power to. Check video, then check the heat element! https://youtu.be/so69viGO6ak
