Our Maytag gas dryer runs for 2 - 3 minutes and then stops. Then it won't start again for 15 - 20 minutes.

A friend's theory is that something causes it to overheat so it shuts off automatically to protect the motor. This happens even when it is empty.

Any ideas?

could be the limit switches, before replacing the parts you have to clean the vents

You might want to try running this units w/o the vent hose connected to the ducting and see what kind of reaction happens. The problem you describe is usually a vent restriction which causes the unit to shut off before it overheats.
