I'm a beginner with appliance repair, so bear with me :)

The bottom section of the fridge stopped cooling a couple of days ago but the freezer was at normal temp. The freezer evaporator fan wasn't running, so I checked it as per the service manual and it is bad. I ordered a replacement and it should be here soon.

In the meantime, I replaced the evaporator fan panel without the dead fan mounted. The freezer eventually gets cold but the compressor won't stop running. After about 20-30 minutes it gets too warm to comfortably keep your hand on it (the compressor fan is working OK). I don't want to run the fridge at all if it might damage the compressor, but I don't know where to go from here :(

Could all this result just from the evaporator fan quitting?
