The plastic dial used to select wash type broke off in the middle of the metal screw shaft, so part of the plastic is still connected to the shaft. I have purchased a new dial from this company and am trying to put it on, but can not unscrew or even pull the broken piece of plastic from the screw shaft. Any ideas on how to get it off without stripping the shaft?

The shaft is threaded so the remainder of the knob should just screw off once it is pushed in.
