My whirlpool is making a grinding noise only while spinning. I rebuilt the gearbox but that didn't help. If someone on here could help me pinpoint the bad component I would be grateful. I would really like to rebuild rather than replace.

I have attached a youtube link of another washer making the same noise as mine.

Thank you

The problem is in the transmission. The agitate gear is not being fully disengaged from the agitator shaft. This is usually caused by a worn agitate cam but can also be caused by a bent tang on the shifter. The tangs on the shifter rotate the cam in one direction or the other to either release or engage the agitate gear. The agitate gear has inner splines that engage with splines on the agitator shaft when transmission is in agitate function. In spin, the cam lifts the agitate gear up and clear of the splines on the agitator shaft. If it doesn't lift far enough, the splines can partially engage causing the noise you are hearing. Sometimes when this happens, the splines engage enough so that the agitator is very briefly stopped during spin.

Eric thanks for the reply. I was looking on the website for parts. There seem to be a number of different parts that are part of the agitate system. Do I want to buy just the agitate cam?
