hi all. a newbie here. I'm asking for help for my brother's Kenmore fridge. His icemaker, or rather his freezer has been leaking along with the icemaker not dispensing properly. We took out the icemaker unit and the plastic cover on the mold is all yucky and peeling off, along with the motor looking rusted. so we will be replacing that. The freezer has been leaking on the bottom of the compartment, which we thought was because of the icemaker. However it seems the leak is actually coming from the evaporator area because with the icemaker completely out and after cleaning the coils and area, its still leaking a few days later. i've attached some pics. #1 shows the evaporator area. The bottom of the pan was all a block of solid ice. water was basically dripping down and pooling in the bottom of the freezer. We didn't see water dripping, but it did go down to the bottom. #2/4 shows the top of that area. not sure if the leak is in this line you see. #5 the ice #6 shows the frozen coils. Does anyone have suggestions as to what the issue is, what we need to look at, or other ideas? Thanks. nikecar attached the following image(s):

Sounds like drain tube is plugged so that the water from the defrost cycle cannot drain into the drain pan.
I would check that it is clear.
If plugged a turkey baster with warm water, an air compressor with low pressure or a wire can often be used to clear it.
Also check that it is not plugged with dust etc. at the drain pan end.
You might as well clean the condenser/compressor fan and the condenser coils while you are down there.
If it looks like stuff is growing in the tube I would flush it with a 10% bleach solution. This should kill the stuff and let you flush it out. You may have to do this several times, let it sit for 15 minutes or so between flushes.
Be careful that the drip tray does not overflow and empty the drip tray after you are done.
Be sure to unplug the unit while doing this.
Also check/clean that the drip tray under the evaporator coils is nice and clean.
This would also be a good time to clean the condenser coils, front kick plate vents and rear cover vents. |

Not really though you could look the unit up at the Sears parts site and they should have part breakdowns.
If you melt the ice with a hair dryer off the metal pan under the evaporator coils you should see the drain hole.
Then if you remove the rear cover from the back of the unit you will see the drain tube that is attached to this hole and directs the water into the drip tray. |

we had scraped the ice off after we snaped the picture, but will check again this weekend hopefully.
