dryer takes to too long too dry---vent is clear ...question is this.

COIL:

1--should it be orange (HOT) all the way - the entire coil (it is not )

2--during drying time, should the coil be going off (not orange) and on (orange) every minute or two (it does)

Normally yes it should, other than a little bit at each end.

Yes they should. This is the thermostat regulating the temperature.

Check the heating coil.
Unplug the unit and both wires to the coil.
Check it with a meter, should be around 10 to 12 ohms.
Then check from each side of the coil to the case/frame, both should be infinite ohms (open). If not the coil may have sagged or broken and is touching the case. This can cause it to heat only part of the coil. Also depending where it breaks it can cause a low heat output.
